Wyoming's Platte River Basin Reservoirs

The Platte River Basin Plan considers reservoirs within Wyoming’s Platte River Basin that have been permitted by the Wyoming State Engineer’s Office (SEO) for beneficial uses other than livestock watering. Reservoirs permitted for livestock watering are typically very small and are therefore not included in the Basin Plan.

Basin Plan information regarding reservoirs and water use from storage is organized on the basis of the following reservoir categories:

  • Federal reservoirs;
  • Non-Federal reservoirs that have permitted capacities greater than 1,000 acre-feet (referred to as “major or large reservoirs”) or that, though permitted to store less than 1,000 acre-feet, are of particular importance; and
  • Non-Federal, non-stock reservoirs that have permitted capacities between 50 acre-feet and 999 acre-feet (referred to as “small reservoirs”).

The Platte River Basin Plan contains publicly-available information regarding Federal reservoirs and large reservoirs including:

  • Storage capacities;
  • Physical characteristics;
  • Operational data; and
  • Estimated reservoir evaporation.
Platte River Basin Plan information regarding small reservoirs consists of a tabulation of Wyoming State Engineer’s Office (SEO) permit data and is not included in this Water Atlas.

The Above Pathfinder subbasin contains three Federal Reservoirs and 19 large Non-Federal Reservoirs.

The Platte River Basin Plan is a planning tool developed for the Wyoming Water Development Office. It presents estimated current and estimated future uses of water in WyomingÆs Platte River Basin. The Plan is not used to determine compliance with or administration of state law, federal law, court decrees, interstate compacts, or interstate agreements.
