Above Pathfinder Subbasin Future Groundwater Development Potential

Depending upon the type of groundwater use and desired water quality and quantity, subbasin aquifer systems have some potential for future development. A map of potential groundwater development sites for the Above Pathfinder subbasin is included below. The future development potential of the major aquifer systems located within the Above Pathfinder subbasin is summarized below:

  • While considered to be hydrologically connected to the North Platte River and its tributaries, the Quaternary Aquifer System yields large quantities of groundwater to wells, but its development potential may be limited depending on the proposed water use.
  • The Late Tertiary Aquifer System has been developed for irrigation, domestic, municipal, and stock supplies in the subbasin and has future development potential in the Saratoga area and along the Sweetwater River.
  • Although the Early Cretaceous Aquifer System is underdeveloped in the subbasin, great potential exists because of its confined conditions and good permeability-porosity rating.
  • The Late Paleozoic Aquifer System has frequently been identified as a source of developable groundwater, particularly for municipal use, because of its typically potable water quality and potential for high yielding wells. Development of this aquifer system will require a site-specific hydrogeologic investigation prior to well drilling to assess development potential.

The Platte River Basin Plan is a planning tool developed for the Wyoming Water Development Office. It presents estimated current and estimated future uses of water in WyomingÆs Platte River Basin. The Plan is not used to determine compliance with or administration of state law, federal law, court decrees, interstate compacts, or interstate agreements.
