Location: The original Heber Reservoir, permitted in 1906 (permit # 896 Res) was located in Sections 35 and 36, Township 13N, Range 119W. It was situated on Branch of Willow Creek, tributary to Willow Creek, tributary to Sulphur Creek, tributary to Bear River. The Broadbent Dam was constructed in 1990 approximately 400 feet downstream of the existing Heber Dam. The Broadbent Reservoir, therefore, includes the old Heber Reservoir storage.

Operational Discussion:

The Broadbent Reservoir was initially permitted to be constructed in Bones Hollow, a tributary of LaChapplle Creek. On July 9, 1989, prior to construction of the reservoir, the Board of Control granted a petition to transfer the permitted rights to the site of the Heber Reservoir. The Broadbent Dam was constructed approximately 400 feet downstream of the Heber Dam, thus incorporating the Heber Reservoir into a single larger reservoir.

The original Heber water rights (388.5 acre-feet) pre-date the Bear River Compact, and hence are not subject to compact restrictions. The Broadbent Reservoir is also supplied via an extension of the Broadbent supply ditch.

In the 1999 Wyoming summary to the Bear River Commission we read; “The Broadbent supply ditch which brings water from the Green River basin now has a recorder with telemetry, thus allowing the State Engineer to document imports. (with a portion of the flow bypassing the gage orifice, only 24.8 acre-feet were recorded over a period from July 31st to the end of the water year, averaging a flow of only 0.2 FS over 62 days.)”
