Little Missouri River Basin (Point Attribute Data)

Theme: Surface Water Quality
Sub-Theme:Point Samples

Dataset Name: EPA STORET Water Quality System

Data Extent
Number of stations:2
Frequency: Grab

Source Agency:Environmental Protection Agency
Region VIII - Denver, Colorado

Dataset Description:

STORET (short for STOrage and RETrieval) is a repository for water quality, biological, and physical data for the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Numerous federal and state agencies across the country regularly utilize the system to store, retrieve and analyze their agency-specific water quality data. These agencies continue to own the data, while the EPA acts as the steward for the system. Location information for surface water sampling sites are resident on the system and follow the EPA's minimum set of data elements, including agency, station ID, state and county, latitude and longitude, USGS hydrologic unit code, and a brief narrative about the site's location. Specific grab sample values may be listed, compared with current and historical data, analyzed statistically, and/or plotted graphically.

Dataset Utility:

First developed in 1964, STORET is the EPA's legacy water quality database which is well established and widely available across the country. Counts listed represent unique non-USGS surface water quality sampling sites within the basin. More than 10 different source agencies have Wyoming water quality data on the system. The dataset may be used to address such issues as changes in pollution levels, permit processing, reporting requirements, and assisting in basin planning and management.

STORET is web enabled. Using a standard browser you can browse the system interactively or create files to be downloaded to your computer. STORET may be accessed online at http://www.epa.gov/storet/ Currently the system is undergoing major modernization efforts to standardize the retrieval procedures, reduce system maintenance, incorporate data quality indicators, and reduce the long-term costs of the system.
