Little Missouri River Basin

Overview

Little Missouri River Basin (Overview) HUC# 101102

Basin Geography:

The Little Missouri hydrologic unit is small and flows northeast out of Crook County Wyoming. The average annual flow at the Montana / Wyoming border is 35,000 acre-ft. Approximately 2000 acre-ft of water is used annually for irrigation in the Little Missouri Basin. Rivers of northeastern Wyoming exhibit different hydrology than other regions of the state. Streams are ephemeral or seasonal and not supplied by mountain runoff. Instead, spring snowmelt on the plains, summer thunderstorms and groundwater contribute to variable flows. Two seasonal flow peaks are generally experienced in March and June.

Relevant Compacts and Decrees:

No relevant and binding compact or decree governance exists on the Little Missouri river.
