Gallatin/Madison River Basin (Overview) HUC# 100200Basin Geography:The Gallatin River flows northwest from extreme Northwest Wyoming and Yellowstone National Park into Montana. Eventually the river becomes the Missouri. Within Wyoming the river is contained entirely with the wilderness of the National Park. The Madison River also flows out of Yellowstone National Park and extreme Northwest Wyoming but more to the west and south before turning north to eventually join the Gallatin at the Missouri headwaters. The Madison River in Wyoming is formed by the Gibbon and Firehole Rivers and follows the main park access to the town of West Yellowstone in Montana. Relevant Compacts and Decrees: Governance by compact is not applicable due to the federal influence within the borders of the State of Wyoming.
