Recreational Water Use: Campgrounds and Other Water-Related Recreation

Recreational uses of water are varied, most are not easily quantified, and most are non-consumptive. The perceived aesthetic value of an area is often directly related to the presence of a stream or lake. Camping is prevalent throughout the Basin, with the most extensive camping opportunities located on national forest land in the Snowy Range, the east slope of the Sierra Madre Mountains, and the Laramie Range.

Glendo Reservoir is a popular water-based recreation area that is located on the Platte River in the Pathfinder to Guernsey subbasin. Glendo Reservoir is located on the North Platte River six miles southeast of the town of Glendo in Platte County.áConstruction on the dam was started in 1954 and completed in 1957.áThe power plant was completed in 1958.áThe adjudicated water right of Glendo Reservoir is 800,000 acre-feet.áThe Wyoming Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources manages recreational facilities at Glendo Reservoir for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.áGlendo State Park provides campgrounds, boat ramps, and a marina concession.áThree interpretive trails, including the Glendo Dam Wetlands Trail, Muddy Bay Wetlands Interpretive Trail, and the Glendo Dam Overlook Trail, provide recreational opportunities for those who desire to learn about the area.áAn entrance fee and a campground fee are assessed to users of Glendo State Park.
